Tired? Hungry? Need to relax at the airport? Lately, there’s more “Day Spa” businesses at the airport (nothing like above, unfortunately, but it’s a trend now). A win-win for the weary traveler and the spa business.
Here’s some examples:
Airport: Newark International Airport (Terminal C, Gate 92)
Spa: d_parture spa Touted as the “world’s first and only full service eco-friendly airport spa,” d_parture offers facials, manicures, reflexology, scalp massage, chair massage, pedicures, haircuts, waxing, a scalp & eye massage, a “tired eyes” treatment, and full makeovers, among others. CLICK HERE for their website.
Airport: Denver International Airport (Terminal B, between Gates B37 & B39, and another location at Gate A49)
Spa: A Massage This spa offers everything from a chair massage (chairs are in back, which is nice), to a full body massage. Prices aren’t cheap, but hey, you’ll feel a ton better. CLICK HERE for more information.

Various Airports:
Spa: Massage Bar This is the meaning of “Healthy Break” as founder Cary Cruea says. The Massage Bar focuses on neck, back and head massages in a chair. Fast, convenient, and soooooo relaxing, you can find a location at one of the following airports: CLICK HERE

Maybe I need to consider flying out of Newark! It’s not much farther from here than Philly or Baltimore, and I could definitely make use of an in-airport spa!

If only they could open one of these in the airplane itself, especially on overseas flights! (Makes those hot towels, much as I love them, seem a little sad.)

Hi Lindy! Yes, isn’t that the truth? That would be great. They are also working on a plane that has glass walls and a roof, but I’m not sure how far away that is as far as development…it’d be great to have a spa on the plane…then look out over the world while getting a massage!

Back in the 90s when my parents were traveling a lot for business – my mother stumbled across some great respites in Asian airports. Special places with dim lighting and soothing music where you could get your shoulders rubbed or take a between-flight nap. The idea behind such spaces are brilliant, and it’s almost shocking that it’s taken so long for the trend to catch on farther west.
I’ve also noticed lately, airports offering pedicures or other quicker spa-like treatments that travelers can grab on a layover or while waiting for a flight. It;s certainly a nice way to pass the time!

Hi! That’s very interesting to know! Yes, I’ve noticed the whole mani/pedi/shoulder massage trend here, too. You would think it would be a great way to make extra $$$ (although I realize their overhead would be very high, but so would the prices), and we in the west would have caught on by now. Maybe it’s a fun trend moving this way. It’s crazy, but I think this rough patch in airline travel will soon get better. Richard Branson had a great thought in the paper this last weekend about how air travel was going to be easier and more fun in the next 30 years. He’s quite the visionary…let’s hope he’s correct!

I know you read my rant against Delta (it’s how I found your blog, by clicking through to your space after you “liked” my post)… so you know how I feel about air travel. I just so resent that something once so fun and glamorous has been reduced to the worst of the worst. I’d rather get a pap smear than fly from one continent to another – they’ve made it THAT miserable for us.
I do indeed hope Sir Richard is correct. I’d love to see the industry swing back to working in favor of the consumer. That would be lovely!

Wouldn’t it though? Yes, that was quite the experience…here’s what I do: I just resign myself to a lost day (flying domestic), or two days (if flying international), so that *seems* to mentally help me a bit. Then, I think of it as going shopping. I actually budget in extra money so I can shop the stores onsite. Of course, in tiny airports…the goings aren’t that good! But I’ve got a couple great pashminas I wouldn’t trade for the world. Then I make myself sit down, have a nice meal, maybe a glass of wine (to hell with dehydration, there’s face mist for that), and observe. Observe the chaos! And thank God I don’t have small children. (ha!) I feel the most for those parents.

I do love indulging in junk food and shopping! And I usually find great reads, like new books or trashy mags I wouldn’t normally buy/have time for. I once found some jewelry in the Phoenix airport that I just love, and would have never found otherwise. So I can agree with where you’re coming from on that front =)
