RENTAL CARS:
Do you need a car? Maybe. If you’re traveling downtown for a quick trip, and staying downtown, take a cab. You won’t have to worry about parking fees or hotel parking fees. (Parking rates can be up to $12/hour, and some hotels charge $30+ to park your car overnight/per night.)
If you plan on exploring or sightseeing, rent a car, just have cash ready for valets or unmanned parking boxes, and be aware of the fees you may be charged for parking overnight. This is mostly for high-end hotels and hotels downtown, of course.
Where are rental cars located? Offsite. Follow the signs inside the airport to “Baggage Claim.” The rental car counters as well as the rental cars are located at the Rental Car Center. CLICK HERE for detailed information about their brand-new “RCC” (Rental Car Center).
Physical Address of RCC: 2200 Rental Car Center Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30337
AMS TIP: You must take the ATL SkyTrain to the RCC (it isn’t the same train as the one connecting terminals, so MAKE SURE it’s the train to the RCC. Once you’ve boarded the ATL SkyTrain to the RCC, the train’s first stop is the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC). DON’T PANIC!
The second stop is the rental car center, where rental contracts, keys and cars are in one convenient location.
Total travel time once boarding the train: allow 10 minutes
Wait time between trains during PEAK times: 5 minutes
RENTAL CAR AGENCIES AT ATL:
CLICK HERE FOR A COMPLETE LIST, INCLUDING PHONE NUMBERS.
Hours of rental car agencies/RCC: Open 24 hours
AMS TIP: I would confirm your rental if you arrive before 7:00 a.m. or after 10:00 p.m. Many say 24 hours, but shuttle service slows down and it’s just not as busy.
Total time to allow from gate to rental car: Allow 30-45 minutes if you check baggage

Lot’s of great info! The ATL is a home base, so I might be a little bias, but I love the experience of the airport. I usually skip the plane train in-between terminals to experience the art and sculptures of the underground tunnels. While waiting for a flight I recommend some SweetWater local beer.

One of my favorite airports to fly in and out of, perhaps only because it is one of my favorite cities.
